What is Home Health Care?

Home health care consists of a variety of different healthcare services that can be completed in a home health setting to monitor patients, manage unstable health statuses, maintain current levels of function, help patients become as self-sufficient as possible, and more.

Here are a few key responsibilities of home health staff while in the patient’s home…

  • Check blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and respiratory rate.
  • Monitor prescriptions and ensure patients are taking medications correctly and on-time.
  • Teach patients about their medications, treatments, and overall care.
  • Employ analytical skills to leverage Epic technology in the most efficient way possible and make the best care decisions for patients.
  • Manage sleep, nutrition, hydration, and pain for patients.
  • Coordinate and communicate care decisions between physicians, nurses, and patients.

What is Epic Dorothy?

EpicCare Home Health (also known as Epic Dorothy) is the Epic module designed for use in a home health setting. This module allows visiting caregivers, including nurses, nurse aids, physical therapists, and occupational therapists, to manage, maintain, and document care in a patient’s home. Dorothy helps facilitate information, document, and care management processes even when care providers serve patients in their own homes.

As part of Epic Systems, the Dorothy module comes with pre-built integrations with other Epic modules and applications, providing access to a patient’s complete medical record and simplifying continuous care plans and home care assessments. And, since this module is integrated with Epic’s clinical information system (CIS), healthcare organizations can offer better, more coordinated care for patients and manage patient records, care plans, assessments, and documents more efficiently.

With the EpicCare Home Health module, users can create a unified patient story across all modules and applications, bridge the continuum of care, and improve the coordination and quality of care for patients.

Who Uses the Epic Home Health Module?

Epic Dorothy is used by both physicians in physical healthcare organizations and facilities and visiting home health caregivers to complete tasks, document care, and improve process efficiency across the board.

Let’t take a closer look at how each group leverages the software…

For Home Health Staff

The Epic Dorothy module allows home health staff to document care directly within the patient’s home, making it easier to monitor medication administration, keep track of patient progress, and empower them to be able to take care of themselves in the future.

With the ability to administer and document patient care decisions at the point of care, home health staff can not only complete tasks at the source to improve process efficiency, but they can also reduce the risk for errors within their clinical data and care documentation.

For Clinicians

EpicCare Home Health offers a “remote client” solution that allows clinicians to install Epic software on their laptop to be able to document care and manage clinical tasks in areas in which they may not have secure internet connection.

When they regain connectivity to their organization’s network, clinicians are able to sync updates so their documentation is uploaded and integrated into their enterprise-wide clinical software, improving both the quality and efficiency of care throughout all areas of the organization.

Integration with Other Applications

Epic Dorothy is built on Epic’s main servers, meaning that it works in conjunction with all other interconnected Epic modules and syncs important patient data or documentation from the point of care to other areas of Epic software if needed.

Whether you need to connect important test results from the hospital lab or Beaker, Epic’s internal laboratory system, to a patient’s medical record to ensure proper medication administration, integrate Epic’s internal infection control module to a patient’s chart to create proper care plans, or anything in between, Epic’s pre-built integrations simplify this process for your team.
