If you or a loved one has ever been admitted to a hospital for any length of time, you know that hospital registration practices can get a little tricky sometimes, especially if you run into planning or insurance issues. And, while this may be frustrating to you as the patient or loved one, trying to keep up with registration, status, and insurance functions for each patient can feel like quite an overwhelming burden for members of the hospital staff.

This is where Epic Prelude comes in.

Prelude applications simplify patient information systems, including registration and tracking functions, and provide tools that allow healthcare providers to accurately manage patient stays and efficiently maintain patient identity through the end of their care lifecycle.

Read on to learn more about the module and what it can do for your organization.

What is Epic Prelude?

Epic Prelude is Epic’s patient registration and tracking system that helps a hospital’s inpatient nursing staff and other important providers stay on top of patient statuses from the time they are admitted to the time they are released. Prelude manages and maintains registration procedures and insurance functions for patients.

The solution provides tools, such as patient transport, housekeeping, and multi-facility bed planning, to help healthcare organizations, including outpatient and specialty clinics, manage the identity and care of admitted patients.

Admission, Discharge, and Transfer (ADT) processes are critical to an organization’s entire enterprise system. And, luckily for healthcare providers and their own patients, Epic Prelude (aka ADT Patient Registration), offers the functionality needed to optimize ADT and manage important clinical data. And, Epic ADT Prelude offers system capabilities that help connect insurance providers to patients and clinical staff, ensuring proper coverage, documentation, and financial assistance.

Epic Prelude vs Cadence: What’s the Difference?

While Prelude uses real-time data to track patient statuses and maintain patient identity, Epic Cadence uses optimized scheduling processes to improve the efficiency of patient and provider schedules and reduce the number of no-shows and cancellations.

Like the other Epic modules, Epic Cadence and Prelude are created with pre-built integration capabilities, making it easier than ever to connect patient registration and scheduling processes to the main Epic servers and solutions. And, although Prelude and Cadence do have different functions throughout the full patient lifecycle, the solutions work well with each other and are often integrated throughout an organization’s Epic software to maximize efficiency and productivity.

Epic Grand Central vs Prelude: Are They the Same?

We know that the Prelude module assists with ADT processes and helps manage reports and statuses and keep the patient’s overall medical record up-to-date throughout the organization’s patient populations, but where does Epic Grand Central come in?

Epic Grand Central is Epic’s ADT application that offers tools to track and manage patient stays from the time they’re admitted to the time they’re discharged or transferred. Grand Central allows users to optimize their real-time patient tracking activities by using improved reporting and analysis functions included in the module. This Epic module acts as the “Grand Central Station” (fitting name for the module, right?) for patient data, including activities that focus on patient transport, location tracking, and even bed planning.

The Grand Central Epic module sounds pretty similar to Prelude, doesn’t it? That’s because it is!

Epic’s Prelude and Grand Central modules do share quite a few commonalities, like patient tracking and registration functions, however, they have a few minor differentiating factors that make them not quite the same solution.

While Grand Central’s main focus lies on ADT functions and patient stay management, Prelude uses ADT framework to better manage patient disposition and keep track of insurance functions throughout a patient’s medical care lifecycle with the organization. So, while the solutions are not the exact same, their similar foundations and functionalities make them the perfect patient planning and tracking duo to meet your organizational needs.
